The Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois will hold a “Kvell and Tell” session on Sunday, June 23, 2019, as part of the group’s annual meeting. Selected members will take turns sharing family history discoveries and research tips starting at 2 p.m. at Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road, Northbrook, Ill. Sign-in, networking, and the JGSI help desk and research library will open at 12:30 p.m.

The JGSI annual meeting on Sunday, June 23, 2019, will feature "Kvell and Tell" presentations.

  • “Shlomo and the General,” a short family history play by JGSI member Gail Duberchin (writer name Gayle Ann Weinstein), will be read by JGSI members Sandy Kiferbaum, Bob Silverstein and Dennis Aron.
  • Debbie Kroopkin, JGSI president, will talk about the genealogical value of Social Security applications.
  • JGSI member Bena Shklyanoy has a presentation of which she says the following: “My mother’s surname is unique for her family only. Why? And why that particular name? Unrelated out-of-the-blue chains of events supplied both a huge branch to my tree and the origin of the name.”
  • JGSI member David Sterlin has a short presentation about a personal experience of discovery with an unexpected solution.
  • Marty Fischer, JGSI vice president-publicity, has an addendum to a previous presentation about his mother’s life in Cuba called “Statelessness: My Immigrant Family’s Story.”

This meeting will also feature an annual report from JGSI’s president, Debbie Kroopkin.

At most monthly meetings, JGSI meeting facilities at Temple Beth-El will open at 12:30 p.m. for those who want to peruse or borrow genealogy research library books, get help with genealogy websites or ask genealogical questions of volunteer mavens, or network with other Jewish family historians before the main program begins at 2 p.m. For more information, call 312-666-0100.  This event is free and open to the public.
