Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois |
One of the most notable recent accomplishments of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois was the digitization of The Chicago Jewish Post & Opinion newspaper to create a free, searchable online database as part of the Illinois Digital Newspaper Collections website.
The database, derived from nine microfilm reels, was co-funded by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and JGSI, which used part of a bequest from the estate of Peggy Morrow, z"l, former long-time editor of Morasha.
If your Jewish ancestors or other relatives lived in the Chicago area during the 1960s, 1970s or 1980s, The Chicago Jewish Post & Opinion database may mention them somewhere in the 831 issues published from August 1962 to December 1981. It can be easily searched for free at https://tinyurl.com/9rmam6dy.
Additional in-depth information regarding this publication was featured in an article by Martin Fischer published in Morasha - Spring 2022 (Volume XXXIX, Number 1).
