Genealogy research methodology is focus of April 24 talk for Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois

“Conflict Management: Evaluating Evidence of Identity” will be the topic of a genealogy presentation by Emily H. Garber for the 2 p.m. CDT, Sunday, April 24, 2022, meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois. A separate, members-only online genealogy discussion will take place at 1 p.m.  Register/RSVP by clicking the button at left.

Genealogy research helps document our families, determine identities of our forgotten or unknown relatives, and reconstruct relationships. But the records we seek do not always cooperate. Records may be wrong. Records may lie.

After the excitement of our early research, it may become more difficult to locate our quarry. Identifying relatives in records may require understanding how, why, and under what circumstances particular records were created. How did our relatives interact with record-generating entities? We may have to creatively out-smart incorrect information in records by corroborating or clarifying with information from other sources. It can get complicated.

This talk will address research challenges presented in a case study in U.S. records and explain procedures for gathering records, evaluating information, and analyzing evidence of our relatives’ lives.

Genealogy researcher, writer and speaker Emily H. Garber is an anthropological archaeologist by training (B.A. and M.A) and has been researching her family history since 2007. She holds a certificate from Boston University’s Genealogical Research program and owns Extra Yad Genealogical Services. She has an abiding interest in family history methodology and historical context.

Emily blogs at https://extrayad.blogspot.com/. She has written two books and several articles on genealogical research that have appeared in Avotaynu. Emily serves on the board of the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. She also chairs the Phoenix Jewish Genealogy Group and is on the board of the Arizona Jewish Historical Society. She served for about ten years as one of the moderators of the JewishGen Discussion Group.
