Program: Sunday, October 30, 2016
Program starts 2:00 p.m. at Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road, Northbrook.

Debbie Kroopkin, co-president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois, will speak on “Techniques for Using Jewishgen.org” at the Sunday, October 30, 2016, meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois. Her presentation will begin at 2 p.m. at Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road, Northbrook, Ill.

The JGSI meeting facilities at Temple Beth-El will open at 12:30 p.m. to accommodate those who want to use or borrow genealogy library materials, get help with genealogy websites or ask genealogical questions before the main program begins at 2 p.m. For more information phone 312-666-0100.

Jewishgen.org is a terrific website for conducting genealogy research, Debbie Kroopkin says. “It has dramatically expanded over the years and has many nooks and crannies that may be untapped avenues for your research,” she said.

In her presentation, Debbie will guide us through the Jewishgen.org maze, explaining the structure and purpose of the many components of the website. Her presentation will provide details that will help researchers glean as much information as possible on their families and towns.

Debbie is serving her third year as co-president of JGSI. Prior to that, she served as a director of special projects. She also serves on the board of directors of Temple Judea Mizpah. She has worked on her family history for over two decades and now conducts research for others. She has a master’s degree in social work administration with years of grant writing, interagency collaboration and program planning experience.

The JGSI “help desk” is open from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at each regular monthly meeting. Member volunteers will access online databases and answer genealogical questions one-on-one for members and visitors as time allows.

The JGSI library has more than 800 volumes of interest to Jewish family historians. Many are available for borrowing by JGSI members for a limited time. All are available for perusing from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. at each regular monthly meeting.
