at Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road, Northbrook.

Genealogist Robin B. Seidenberg will speak on “Treasures in Print: Finding and Using Historical Newspapers” at the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois’ meeting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2014, at Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road, Northbrook.

When she started asking questions about her Hollywood producer uncle, no one remembered or was willing to give her information.  Using historical newspapers she learned he had made millions in real estate and radio manufacturing and was known as the "zipper king" on his arrival in Hollywood. Using her uncle's story and many other examples, Seidenberg will explain how to unlock family secrets using historical newspapers.

“Historical newspapers are a phenomenal resource for uncovering family information that often cannot be located any other way,” she said.  “Unlike censuses and other official records, they have neither time nor privacy restrictions.”
A member of the Genealogical Speakers Guild and the Association of Professional Genealogists, Seidenberg currently serves as co-president of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois and vice president of PCBUG. She has been studying her family history since 1997.

She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Chicago and completed most of her Ph.D. requirements at the University of Illinois. This former college French teacher has used her linguistic skills to translate family records from Polish and Old Cyrillic.

Seidenberg specializes in using historical newspapers to research family history.

The JGSI meeting facilities at Temple Beth El will open at 12:30 p.m. to accommodate members who want to use or borrow genealogy library materials, get help with genealogy websites or ask genealogical questions before the main program begins.
